Multipal Image Performance

I''m making a game using ASCII values(like Mario Bros'' used) I have one big image that is shopped up into little images, and I use the glVertex2d to specify what image to load in what block on the screen. When the opengl window is covered by images, its really slow. Any suggestions? Thanks
