Using External 3d objects ?

Hello all,

I am new to this forum so please be gentle.
I am a beggining/Intermediate c++ programmer,
with extremly limited knowlege of asm. I have messed around with graphics in dos. Although I have never even come close to programming a game, although I do have a good idea how to.

My question is:
How does one use an external 3d object (created in 3dsMax or Truespace for ex.)
in a program/game? I am aware that all that an 3d object file is , is a list of coordinates and such. But I am still a little confused on how to go about achieving this.
Has anyone done this ? And has sample code a program maybe opening a 3d Object file (a sphere for ex.) and displaying it?

It would be greatly appreciated, and then maybe I can create something that I can show off to others without being mocked and laughed at

Thankyou Kindly in advance.
