Thanx for the criticizm. The reason I''m doing something this simple, is because I won''t be able to do something more complex. I''ll spice it up, but making a complex story and a simple ass game is lame. And I don''t have enough resources to make a game that will really be good enough for a complex story.

WOW. That is the best answer to a gripe I have heard on this board. No flame, no bitch - just answer.

HOORAY!!!

I am not being sarcastic here.

Anyway, bot ideas---
Try to imagine what would happen if multi-purpose industrial robots got smart enough to build new versions of themselves. Totally alien - but strangely usefull.
My sig used to be, "God was my co-pilot but we crashed in the mountains and I had to eat him..."
But folks whinned and I had to change it.
It doesn''t have to be original. Many succesfull games were based on older ideas.
Anyway i have a question:
Why does any futuristic game have to do with earth destruction and mankind extinction?
I mean,we always here the story:"In year 2134 the Earth was destroyed by a wicked experiment" or "by a great war" or "by a nuclear holocaust" or virus or disease and so on.
The same applies for movies too(waterworld,terminator,12 monkeys, etc.)
Just asking...

Here these words vilifiers and pretenders, please let me die in solitude...
Well, I don''t have the resources to integrate a plot into a game so people would give a damn. I just want to write a pretty story or make a nice cutscene at the beginning just to get people involved. Putting the plot in the actual game will in fact make my game crapier.
If your looking for an idea to base you robots on, use insects. Highly specialised units which perform a single task. Also imagine how cool a great big metallic spider would look. I''m not saying copy insects exactly for robot designs but you could get some good ideas.

Heres an idea for a story as well. You said that all life was dead and the robots were fighting amongest themselves. Why not have it that they have used all of the resources of earth up, and that each of the group of robots are killing each other to gain enough resources to build a ship to begin "assimilation" of the rest of the universe. Your guy could be a unit sent to stop the attempts of another group so that his group can seize control of the other sides craft and resources.

Because the character is a robot, instead of giving him weapons, give him specific modules. there are modules for basic body parts as well as tools that can be used as weapons. Keeping with the insect idea he could have cutting pincers as a hand weapon and have a cutting laser embedded in his head for an example. To get new weapons he pulls his enemies apart and takes their modules, this would allow your player to upgrade his legs/arms/armour and such in a different and believe-able way for the setting.

What do you think? Perhaps a little complex for what your duing but i think you could use some of these ideas in you game.
Thanx a lot, man. I''ll definetly use the "modules" idea. Or at least I''ll try to incorporate it into the game in some way.

Concerning the resources, I''ll have to think more about it, because I''m not sure how will it go with what I''m doing so far.

Anyway, thanx a lot, I appreciate good ideas.
Seriously, the robot idea has been used to death.
Though i do give kudos for the overhead idea, I
just don''t see how it would work. Try something more
original, instead of robots in an apocalyptic future
try bio-wared humans in a more Gibson/Stephenson-ish
setting. Allow player customizable weapons/upgrades/etc.
Cuz, like i said, robots are such an overused genre,
think of something original.

Run_the_Shadows reccomends William Gibson? Heh heh. I love shadowrun =)

RTS (hey, that''s neat... Run The Shadows, RTS...), if you ever put in for a high quality shadowrun FPS (it fits sooo well) I will through all of my resources in with you.

Just a thought, what about if an enemy was a small group of two or three robots. Example, one robot with good defense could hold a couple smaller attack robots that would run out and attack the player then go back in. They might even regenerate inside the larger one. This would force the player to either kill the large bot or prevent the smaller ones from getting back inside so he could finish them off. Adding a bit of strategy to a mindless shooter goes a long way.
I agree with some people above that the idea of robots taking over our little planet is kind of overused...however is still not bad. Anyway, not pointing out any similarites in you story here I think the robots used in the film the Matrix are kind of cool, not the ones inside the Matrix(?) but the ones in the "real" world....

Otherwise I would say go for insect inspired robots...even if that has been used a lot before...nothing beats the creepy felling of a big shining scorpion racing towards you, or the sound of a mechanic spider lurking around the next corner...
